Abstract

603,634. Cylinders; valve gear. PESCARA, R. P. June 23, 1942, No. 8618. Convention date, March 25, 1941. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] In an engine with cylinders in line, and inlet and exhaust valves arranged in pairs in planes transverse to the axis of the engine, the inlet valves 11 are connected in pairs by passages leading to common inlets 30, Fig. 2, and the intermediate exhaust valves 10 are similarly connected in pairs by passages leading to common outlets 34, the end exhaust valves having single passages 36 leading to outlets 37. The combustion chamber is preferably of somewhat oval form in cross-section, and has its upper face formed by the inclined seating of the inlet valve 11, Fig. 1, and the horizontal seating of the exhaust valve 10. The spark plug is arranged at the same side of the engine as the cam-shaft 18. The cylinder head is secured by bolts 38 ... 42 at one side, but at the other side where the cylinder passages are arranged, it is held by studs 43 ... 46 with the nuts arranged in housings 47 . . . 50. These studs may be fixed in the cylinder block or in the head. Valve gear.-The valves are actuated from the cam-shaft 18 at the side of the cylinder opposite the inlet and exhaust passages, the cams operating tappets 19, 20 and push-rods 23, 24, which actuate rockers 21, 22 mounted exterior to the space between the valves. All the rockers 22 may be mounted on a single shaft 27, and the rockers 21 may be similarly mounted, or pivoted on separate inclined pins 26 as shown in Fig. 2.
