[Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] A combustion chamber is formed by an extension of the cylinder bore and a sloping roof containing the valves 7, 4, which preferably function as exhaust and inlet respectively. The detachable head joint may be in, and the valve 4 normal to, the plane of the roof which is inclined at between 45‹ and 60‹ to the cylinder axis ; the valve 4 may, however, be less inclined to the axis and the piston may have a baffle, so that the clearance space is, substantially, limited to the exhaust side in which one or more sparking plugs 9 are arranged. Valve gear.-The valves may be operated by a common shaft 16, by separate overhead shafts, or by a common shaft in the crank-case.
