Abstract

309,092. Ricardo, H. R. Oct. 5, 1927. Cylinders, combustion chambers of, and arrangement of igniters and baffles for guiding charge in.-In a cylinder having a combustion chamber which overlaps a portion only of the cylinder bore, a projection G on the cylinder head, preferably over the exhaust valve H, forms a pocket, containing between 10 and 25 per cent of the charge and the sparking plug is mounted therein. The projection G is recessed if necessary to provide clearance for the valves, and the dimension L is as small as possible; the invention is especially applicable to the combustion chambers described in Specification 148,046. The Specification contains several indicator diagrams showing how smoother running is produced by the engine, and it is stated that detonation is avoided when the clearance between the piston top and the cylinder head is less than 1/16 inch; figures are also given to show to what extent the compression ratio must be reduced to avoid detonation when the clearance exceeds this amount.
