Abstract

Flame igniters.-In an engine in which ignition is first effected in an auxiliary cylinder B and then extends to the main cylinder A past a valve C, means are provided for adjusting, during working, the relative positions of the main and auxiliary pistons A<1>, B<1> so as to vary the time of ignition. The piston B<1> drives a crank shaft V connected by helical gears H, F to a secondary shaft G, which is further geared by helical gears E, D to the main crank shaft T. Axial movement of the shaft G, by means of a lever V<1> and fork X, causes relative angular movement between the crank shafts V and T. The auxiliary cylinder is fed from a carburettor P past a valve R, and the main cylinder is supplied through a valve A<2> with a heavier fuel. The ignition in the auxiliary cylinder may be effected by compression alone, or by means of a spark plug J.
