Abstract
193,953. Ricardo, H. R. Nov. 30, 1921. Motor power plant.-In an engine operating with internal combustion in one or more cylinders and with steam in one or more other cylinders, or in the opposite ends of the same cylinders, the supply of steam is controlled automatically in accordance with the weight per cycle of the combustible charge entering each internalcombustion cylinder. The engine may comprise two outer cylinders working with internal combustion and a central steam cylinder, the supply of steam to which is controlled by a valve such as A placed in the steam pipe B and connected to a diaphragm C, one side of which is connected to the induction pipe of the combustible mixture by a pipe E, so that the steam is cut off when the throttle in the induction pipe is closed. The movement of the valve A may also be made dependent on the steam pressure by allowing this to act on differential pistons H, J or on a second diaphragm. A dash-pot may be provided in connection with the diaphragm C to damp out pulsations. Hand control of the steam valve A may also be provided by means of a lever M. The heat from an oil jacket surrounding the cylinders, and from the exhaust, may be used in generating steam.
