Abstract

473,801. Four-stroke engines; regulating. MALLORY, M. Oct. 6, 1936, No. 27150. Convention date, Dec. 28, 1935. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), and 7 (vi)] Two cylinders 9, 10 are supplied by separate means with a high grade, rich, or heated mixture and a low grade, lean, or cold mixture respectively, means such as a sparking plug 35 is provided for igniting the mixture in the cylinder 9, a port 19 connects the upper ends of the two cylinders whereby the flame may pass into the cylinder 10 so as to ignite the mixture therein, and a valve such as a sleeve valve 20 controlling the port 19 is open at all times except during the suction stroke. The cylinders are supplied by carburetters 27, 28 with which valves 29, 30 linked together by a rod 31 are associated. An inlet valve 24 controls the admission of fuel to the cylinder 10, and the valve 20 controls admission to the cylinder 9. The valve 29 is open slightly for idling when the valve 30 is completely closed. A piston 8 in the cylinder 10 is connected by a rod 11 to a crank-pin 13, and a piston 7 in the cylinder 9 is connected by a rod 15 to the big end of the rod 11 and has a slight lead over the piston 8 corresponding to the time of flame propagation to the cylinder 10. A plug 36 may be replaced by an oil-injector, in which case air is admitted to the cylinder 10 by the valve 24 ; alternatively, the oil may be injected into the airstream.
