Abstract
355,812. Starting oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London, and BERGIUS, W. M., 254, Dobbies' Loan, Glasgow. May 29, 1930, No. 16645. [Classes 7 (ii), 7 (iii), 7 (v), and 7 (vi).] A compressionignition engine is started as an explosion engine, by increasing the cylinder clearance, by holding open a common sealing valve D, normally used for inlet and exhaust through valves F<1>, G<1>, and admitting combustible mixture through the valve F<1>; a sparking - plug socket E<1> is provided. A valve lifter for the valve D comprises a plunger M which may be held in engagement with a lug H<3> on the valve rocker H by a pin passing through holes M<3>, M<4>. To reduce throttling effect, the inlet valve F<1> is timed to close after the sealing valve D. Throttle valves, in branched pipes leading, respectively, from a carburetter, and a supply of compressed air, are interconnected so that, when one is open, the other is closed. During normal working, liquid fuel is injected from a nozzle C<1> down a cylindrical combustion chamber C ; the air may be whirled round the cylinder axis by offsetting the inlet and exhaust ports F, G, with respect to the sealing valve D as shown in plan in Fig. 3.
