Abstract

355,813. Compression - ignition oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London, and BERGIUS, W. M., 254, Dobbie's Loan, Glasgow. May 29, 1930, No. 16646. [Classes 7 (iii) and 7 (v).] In an engine in which an air charge is forced during the compression stroke into a chamber of smaller volume than the cylinder and the chamber is formed by an annular wall and a corresponding recess in the cylinder or piston, tangential passages are disposed in the annulus and impart a whirling motion to the charge as it enters the chamber at the end of the compression. A valve C<1>, which is located between the normal inlet and exhaust valves, is held open during starting when combustible mixture is admitted through an inlet part D<1>, and ignited by the plug D<5>. The piston E has an annular flange E<1> which enters the mouth of a combustion chamber B<1> in which is a fuel admission device F. Air from the cylinder is forced into the chamber through tangentially arranged slots E<2> in the flange. According to modified constructions, the slots are formed in the wall of the combustion chamber, and according to another modification, a projecting flange is secured to the mouth of the combustion chamber and enters a recess in the piston; the slits are formed in the projecting flange. Specifications 261,435, [Class 7 (iii), Internal-combustion engines, Carburetting- apparatus &c. for], 342,304, and 355,812 are referred to.
