Abstract

428,695. Cylinders. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. Nov. 17, 1933, Nos. 32064 and 32065. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] A turbulent combustion chamber for an overhead valve engine comprises a compact chamber G which, with its connecting passage G<3>, has a capacity of between 85 and 98 per cent of the clearance space ; the cross-sectional area of a constriction G<2> in the passage G<3> is between 15 and 25 per cent of the piston face area, and the clearance between the flat part C<1> of the cylinder head, containing the valve seats, and the piston face is between 1 and 2.5 per cent of the piston stroke. The sparking plug H is located opposite the passage G<3> in a smooth-walled recess G'. The constriction G<2> is formed by the cylinder bore overlapping not more than one half of the orifice of the combustion chamber. The constriction may however be nearer the chamber G-e.g. in a plane inclined at 45‹ with the flat underside of the head. Fig. 4 shows a cylindrical combustion chamber having a conical top. By inserting a liner L, a loosely fitting plug M, a fuel injection device J and a heater plug K and by removing the sparking plug H and plugging the socket, the engine will operate by compression-ignition as described in Specifications 384,340 and 389,862. Specification 148,046, [Class 7 (ii)], also is referred to. One of the Provisional Specifications describes an arrangement in which the orifice of the combustion chamber is smaller and does not overlap the cylinder bore.
