Abstract

428,506. Starting oil engines. L'ORANGE, P., 130, Cannstatterstrasse, Feuer. bach, Stuttgart, Germany. June 13, 1934, Nos. 17501 and 17502. Convention dates, June 17, 1933 and March 17, 1934. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] The starting of a cold engine by compressionignition is facilitated by increasing the pressure on the fuel jet by thermal means, which, preferably, is effected by increasing the compression ratio. In Fig. 1 a part B of the combustion chamber is closed by a valve F operated by thermal means J located in the cooling water, and in Figs. 2 and 3 a bowed plate D and a member S expand and open chambers M, Q. The surfaces forming the passage T may have staggered grooves which communicate by ducts with the chambers Q, X respectively, and the member S may be inverted and constitute a pre-combustion chamber. In Fig. 5, a part 5 expands to open a valve 6, a central part 3 being kept cool by water circulating through pipes 4, and in Fig. 6, the expansion of a bridge piece 10, anchored at its ends, lowers a precombustion chamber 9 to the position shown and provides access to an annular chamber 13. As modified in Fig. 10, a member U expands and closes ports b which are additional to the usual ports a giving communication to a pre-combustion chamber ; at starting, air, compressed in the cylinder, thus has better access to the fuel jet. In further modifications the ports b are at the lower end of the pre-combustion chamber.
