Abstract

444,879. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. June 29, 1934, No. 19221. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compression-ignition engine air is forced from the engine cylinder into a combustion chamber, which is of circular crosssection in planes at right angles to an axis, through one or more restricted passages arranged so that the air enters the chamber with an axial and a tangential component and rotates about the axis. The maximum diameter of the chamber is at least 50 per cent greater than its length and a fuel injector delivers into the chamber approximately at right angles to the axis. As shown in Fig. 1, the chamber which has fiat end walls is formed partly by a pocket D in the cylinder head and partly by a recess E<2> in a heat-insulated plug E in which the passages E<4> are formed. The axis of the fuel jet delivered by the injector G may have a small component in or against the direction of rotation of the air. In the modified construction shown in Fig. 3, the combustion chamber is formed by recesses J<2>, J3 in plug-like members J, J<1> which are secured in the cylinder head by bolts J<9>. The passages J<4>, J<6> are formed in the lower member J whilst the member J<1>, which carries an igniter K to facilitate starting, is provided with water cooling passages J<6> and may be separated from the member J by an air gap. The upper part of the chamber may contain a heat-insulating liner. Further modifications are described in which (1) either of the recesses J<2>, J<3> is frustoconical; (2) the side wall of the chamber between the end wall and the part of maximum diameter is concave, conical, polygonal, or partly concave and partly flat; and (3) the portion of the air charge at the end of the compression stroke contained in the combustion chamber and the passages in the plug does not exceed 50 per cent by volume of the total air charge.
