Abstract
508,192. Oil engines. PETTERS, Ltd., DALE, C. B. M., and GARTH, H. Jan. 3, 1939, No. 188. [Class 7 (iii)] The combustion chamber is formed by a pocket B<1> of circular or oval cross-section formed between the faces of the piston and the cylinder head and a groove B<2> entering the pocket tangentially and extending from the circumference of the cylinder to the pocket, fuel being delivered along the groove by an injector D in the wall of the cylinder or head. To assist the rotation of the air charge about the axis 'of the pocket, the air is admitted to the cylinder through a masked valve C, and /or one or more subsidiary grooves B<3> of gradually increasing depth extend tangentially into the pocket. The pocket and groove may be formed in the piston or in the cylinder head.
