Abstract

351,633. Oil engines. FOWLER, C. H. and COOPER, H., Steam Plough & Locomotive Works, Leeds. April 17, 1930, No. 12258. [Class 7 (iii).] In an airless injection engine of the type in which a portion of the combustion air is forced into a pocket C in the piston during the compression stroke, the entrance to the pocket is so arranged as to admit only a small quantity of fuel or none. A single passage c<1>, Fig. 1, leading from the main combustion space to the pocket c may be employed, or a plurality of passages c<11> arranged in a circle may be used, as shown in Fig. 5, in which pockets c<10> are shown in both pistons of an opposedpiston two-stroke engine ; alternatively, one piston only may be provided with a pocket. The passage c<1> may be formed in a lip on the piston crown, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the stream of air leaving the pocket will cause a whirling of the charge in the main combustion chamber. The return of the air is expedited when the entrance to the pocket is so located relative to the injector d that a small quantity of fuel is injected into and ignited in the pocket.
