Abstract
369,229. Oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. Dec. 16, 1930, No. 37929. [Class 7 (iii).] In a liquid-fuel injection engine of the type having an offset combustion chamber E which communicates with the cylinder through a port E<1> and in which turbulence of the air in the chamber is produced to facilitate the mixing of the fuel supplied by an injector J, a portion of the air is entrapped by a projection B<1> on the piston as it enters an adjacent chamber D near the end of the compression stroke ; one or more restricted and tangential passages F<1> connect the chambers D and E, and the highly compressed air passing to the chamber D accentuates the turbulence therein. The port E<1> is of sufficient area to permit a comparatively free gas flow therethrough, and it may be so arranged as to produce a preliminary whirling of the charge in the combustion chamber either in the same direction or opposed to that effected by the passage F<1>. A valve G<1> controls an air inlet port G arranged in the top of the chamber D, which may be of other than cylindrical form and located coaxially or eccentrically in the cylinder head, the projection on the piston being correspondingly shaped and located. An exhaust valve H<1> is located in the top of the combustion chamber E. Alternative positions are provided for the fuel injector J.
