Abstract

897,314. Combustion chambers; cooling; carburetters; valve gear. GEOSSACK, L. A., EVART, G. V., and RIBINSKY, D. A. Aug. 5, 1959, No. 26689/59. Classes 7(2), 7(3) and 7(6). A precombustion chamber 1, Fig. 1, is fed with an auxiliary rich mixture through a valve 5, from a carburetter having cylinder and precombustion chamber mixture sections 10, 9 and is provided with holes 3, Fig. 2 which are directed at an angle with respect to each other and are located in a plane substantially perpendicular to the cylinder axis so as to spray active products of incomplete burning into the main combustion chamber 2. Valve gear. A single valve lever 6 opens the valve 5 before the main inlet valve. Combustion chambers. A deflector 26 which may be either cast integrally or pressed-in, shields a spark plug 4 from hot gases in the main combustion chamber 2. Cooling. The valves, nozzle holes, spark plugs and deflectors are cooled by a pump fed water distribution pipe 25. A number of holes connect the cylinder head with the cylinder block which is cooled by gravity flow. Carburation. The carburetter 7 has cylinder and pre-combustion chamber sections 10, 9, which have interconnected butterfly throttle and throttle cock valves 12, 13. The cylinder section 10 is connected through an intake manifold 19 to an inlet passage 20 and the pre-combustion chamber 9 connects through a pipe 24, a well 23 with a feed passage 21 having heat absorbing fins 22. Rich mixture enters the well 23, which is heated by conduction, and drops on to the well bottom where it evaporates whereafter it rises along the annular clearance between the well bore and pipe 24 to mix with the stream of non- condensed carburized fuel and air mixture. With conditions of high inlet vacuum such as during automobile over-run, a valve 30 is arranged to reduce the vacuum by admitting air through the pipe 33 and the orifice 29 which is uncovered by a spring-loaded valve 17 under the influence of the vacuum in the carburetter intake.
