Abstract
706,974. Combustion chambers: ports; cooling; air cells; vaporizers. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. Aug. 15, 1950 [Aug. 15, 1949], No. 20225/50. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) In the cylinder head of a liquid-cooled internal-combustion engine having valve passages 15, 16, Fig. 1, in the head and a cooling arrangement in which the coolant is caused to flow transversely in the head in relation to the longitudinal cylinder axis and wherein channels, such as 25, formed between adjacent walls 19 and 20 of the valve passage and which communicate with each other closely above the base of the cylinder head conduct coolant, introduced from the cylinder jacket 5, Fig. 2, in a number of streams which correspond to the number of channels, the coolant passing into the head is caused to flow with increased velocity by means of deflectors 31, 33, Fig. 1, for example, the channels,. such as 23-25, Fig. 1, may also be formed between walls 11 of a pre-combustion chamber 9 and walls 19 and 20. The cylinder head 4, houses the inlet and exhaust valves 7 and 8, respectively, and the valve passages 15, 16 open into the top and far side walls, respectively, of the cylinder head, which passages are of nozzle form adjacent the valve seatings. The chamber 9 is formed by insertions 10, Fig. 2, which are either in direct contact with or separated by air spaces from the surrounding wall 11; fuel is injected into the chamber from a nozzle 13 axially aligned with the passage 12 by which the chamber is connected with cylinder 2. An incandescent sparking plug 14 projects into the chamber 9 on the side thereof remote from the valves. The three radial passages 23, 24 and 25, Fig. 1, converge'towards a central point 26 whilst the jacket 5 communicates through openings 28, 29, 30 with the cylinder head cooling jacket 6, the openings being situated at the outer ends of the radial passages. The discharge points of the openings 28-30 in the head are covered by the U-shaped deflectors 31-33, which direct the coolant in the form of jets along the passages to the point 26 from whence it flows upwardly; the deflector 31 serves two cylinders. Further openings 34, Fig. 2, may be provided between the cylinder and head cooling jackets. The invention is applicable to engines working on the Otto or Diesel cycle and particularly relates to Diesel engines with combustion chambers or air-cells located in the head, as well as to engines with three or more valves for each cylinder. The walls surrounding the bolts 3, Fig. 1, securing the head to the cylinder are made separate from the passage and chamber walls.
