221,254. Chorlton, A. E. L., and Invernairn, (W. Beardmore), Lord. May 29, 1923. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and air is admitted to the cylinder of an oil engine separately from the liquid fuel and is ignited by a sparking-plug in order to ensure the ignition of the fuel. Fig. 1 shows the arrangement of ports in a cylinder fitted with a sleeve valve. Air is drawn in at E and hydrogen at F on the suction stroke, at the end of the compression stroke oil fuel is injected from the nozzle D. G indicates exhaust ports. A cylinder fitted with lift valves is also described. The charge of hydrogen may be varied and at light loads the engine may be run on hydrogen only. The engine is suitable for airships.
