Abstract

241,410. French, L. O. Dec. 1, 1924. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-Fuel supplied by gravity or pressure is admitted during the air admission period through a valve 18 to a chamber 9, which is in communication through a series of orifices 12 with a passage 11 connecting the engine cylinder with an ignition chamber 10. During the compression stroke the fuel in the chamber 9 is wholly or in part t vaporized, and a portion of the vapour enters the chamber 10 through the orifices 12, and is ignited therein, the consequent increase in pressure in the chamber 10 serving to inject the remainder of the fuel from the chamber 9 into the cylinder. The fuel is supplied past a rnanaally or governor controlled needle valve 19, and air enters with the fuel through a passage 34, this air being drawn either from the atmosphere in the case of a fourstroke engine or from the scavenging air in the case of a two-stroke engine. The valve 18 is actuated with the main air admission valve, by a lug 21 on the rocking arm 22. The orifices 12 are formed in a detachable sleeve 27, which in a small engine may be formed integral with the chamber 10, and in a large engine may be water cooled. In a modified construction, thei chamber 10, which is uncooled is situated on the cylinder axis, fuel is injected by means of a pump into the chamber 9, and a plate having a number of small orifices is provided for the lower end of the passage 11. The invention is equally applicable to four-stroke or two-stroke engines.
