Abstract

371,852. Cylinders. WESLAKE, H., 35, Redcliffe Road, South Kensington, London, and AUTOMOTIVE ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., The Green, Twickenham, Middlesex. Dec. 20, 1930, No. 38465. [Class 7 (ii).] A lateral combustion chamber 1 is connected to the cylinder by two passages 5, 6, one of which may extend further into' the cylinder than the other. The partition 7, forming the passages, is rounded at 10 adjacent the exhaust port 4 to ease the flow of mixture from the inlet port 3. The sparking-plug, located in a socket 11, is cooled by mixture forced through an additional passage 20 during the compression stroke. The partition 7 need not extend beyond the cylinder bore, the passages 5, 6 then uniting and combining to form a passage which may be arcuate as shown in Fig. 3. The passages 5, 6 may converge towards the bore and the cross-sectional area of the passage 5 is, preferably, greater than that of the passage 6 ; their combined cross-sectional area is at least equal to that of the ports, but the area of the clearance space 14, between the head and the piston crown, is as large as possible. The depth of this clearance space is the minimum necessary for mechanical reasons ; a similar space may be left between the partition 7 and the cylinder block. The inlet and exhaust ports may be opposed in the chamber 1, or the exhaust port alone may be in the chamber, the inlet port being over the bore. The chamber 1 may be overlapped by the piston which then has cavities to correspond to the two passages.
