Abstract
309,009. Ricardo, H. R. Jan. 2, 1928. Four-stroke-cycle engines.-In a compound engine having two high-pressure cylinders A which exhaust alternately in a low-pressure cylinder B, the transfer is controlled by sleeve valves D in the high pressure cylinders. The valves reciprocate and oscillate and also control the inlets D<1> to the high pressure cylinders. The cylinders and valves as shown are watercooled, the valves at their upper ends passing over the water-cooled heads E. The low pressure exhaust is controlled by a litt valve F; any other type. of valve, or terminal exhaust ports may be used. The charge is supplied by a pump, which may be a turbo-blower or the front side of the working pistons or as shown by a piston pump H; gas or mixture may be supplied. The whole of the charge may be pumped or rich mixture may be supplied by the pump to air drawn in the cylinders. A number of units as described can be used together, the units being arranged radially or to form a cross or in other ways. Specification 17882/15 is referred to.
