Description

4- 2339844 QUIEETER PARALLEL-TWIN FOUR-STROKE ENGINE This invention
relates to the parallel twin four-stroke internal combustion engine using pistons that move together with a common crank angle and fire alternately.
The parallel twin four-stroke engines are used in motorbikes and in auxiliary power units. They are usually noticeable because of the noise. They do vibrate and shake the object they are attached to.
According to the present invention a parallel-twin four-stroke internal combustion engine is modified so that the exhaust gasses are kept to do more work in a main power cylinder and in an additional third cylinder, whose piston lags behind half a stroke, by means of valves and passages, before being released to exhaust.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- Figure I shows a parallel-twin four-stroke engine with connecting exhaust reuse passage with valve, a third cylinder and it's exhaust port.
Referring to the drawing, as the crankshaft 10 rotates clockwise, a main piston I I moves upwards in it's cylinder 12, past the exhaust reuse valve 13, and completes the compression stroke. It then moves downward on the power stroke. Meanwhile the third piston 17 has pushed some exhaust gas out the exhaust port 16 and compressed the remaining exhaust gas into the exhaust reuse passage 14 and the end of the second cylinder 15.
As the main piston 11 exposes the exhaust reuse valve 13, the working gas mixes with the compressed gases to give a pressurized gas, which then works on both the main piston I I and on the third piston 17 until the third piston opens the exhaust port 15. The exhaust valve for the cylinder then opens as piston 11 is on it's exhaust stroke.
The second main piston, behind piston I I and parallel to it, is starting it's compression stroke. It has it's own exhaust reuse valve but uses the same exhaust reuse passage 14, cylinder 15, third piston 17 and exhaust port 16. The two main pistons alternate in using the third cylinder to expand their working gases before exhausting.
N. I - The exhaust reuse valve 13 may be actuated by the exhaust pressure from the main cylinder or may be power driven, it may also act as an inlet valve.

Claims (4)

  1. I A parallel-twin four-stroke internal combustion engine is modified so that the exhaust gasses are kept to do more work in a main power cylinder and in an additional third cylinder, whose piston lags behind by half a stroke, by means of valves and passages, before being released to exhaust.
  2. 2 A parallel-twin four-stroke internal combustion engine as claimed in Claim I wherein the valve in the exhaust reuse passage is operated by exhaust pressure from the main cylinder.
  3. 3 A parallel-twin four-stroke internal combustion engine as claimed in Claim I wherein the valve in the exhaust reuse passage is operated by mechanical means.
  4. 4 A parallel-twin four-stroke internal combustion engine as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the valve in the exhaust reuse passage is also used as an inlet valve.
