Valves.-In a compound engine in which the low-pressure cylinder and piston 1, 5 also act as a pump to deliver the fresh charge to the highpressure cylinders 2, 2<1> alternately, the interchange of gases is controlled by the valves 19, 21, each valve acting as an inlet and exhaust valve for its cylinder. The valves 21 may be dispensed with.
