Abstract

265,610. Felies, J. F. Feb. 6, 1926, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Two- and four-stroke-cycle engines. - The Figure shows a double-acting four-stroke compound engine in which the passages 3 between the two cylinders are controlled by valves 5 which are connected to balancing-pistons 6. The passage 3 is made very large, and to allow for this enlargement of the combustion chamber witheut reducing the pressure therein at the end of the compression stroke of the high-pressure piston, the air admitted at the commencement of the pressure stroke is in excess of atmospheric. The amount of fuel injected is also increased to at least 1 1/2 times the normal amount. The pistons 6 are fitted with guiding-baffles 9. The valve 5 may also serve to exhaust the low-pressure cylinder either to the atmosphere or to a third expansion cylinder. The invention may also be applied to two-stroke compound engines. With four-stroke engines, two high-pressure cylinders may discharge into one low-pressure cylinder; or in the case where only one high-pressure cylinder is used, the low-pressure piston may. during its idle stroke, draw in fresh air for cooling purposes. Further, the low-pressure piston may be connected to two cranks, when the pressure thereon is excessive.
