Abstract
252,736. Thormeyer, H. May 28, 1925, [Convention date]. Four-stroke-cycle engines. - In compound engines wherein a low pressure cylinder b is arranged between two high-pressure cylinders a, the low pressure cylinder is stepped and a lowpressure piston c of two diameters is used. The low-pressure cylinder has terminal exhaust ports g controlled by the small diameter part of the piston, and terminal air admission ports f controlled by the annular part of the piston. The high-pressure cylinders each have a valvecontrolled port in the cylinder head and terminal ports d. At the end of the expansion stroke in one of the high-pressure cylinders, the combustion products flow to the low-pressure cylinder through both head and terminal ports. When the low-pressure piston reaches the end of its expansion stroke air enters by the ports f, and drives the products in the channels between the cylinders and in the cylinders out through the ports g. The air retained in the annular chamber is compressed on the up-stroke of the lowpressure piston and charges the high-pressure cylinder, the valve e being held open while the crank of the high-pressure piston travels 140 to 160‹.
