Abstract

161,300. Arcus, C. R. Jan. 10, 1920. Regulating.-A compound reversing engine comprises two high-pressure cylinders C<1>, C<4> driving opposite cranks and two low-pressure cylinders C<2>, C<3> with cranks at right angles to those of the cylinders C<1>, C<4>. Air is compressed in the lower end of each cylinder C<2>, C<3> and, after Bowing through jackets b<1> of the cylinders C<1>, C<4>, enters these cylinders when the pressure therein has fallen low enough in consequence of the pistons uncovering the ports R', R<2> leading to the tops of the low-pressure cylinders. The volume of air is sufficient to expel the whole of the combustion products, and air is also expelled from the high-pressure cylinders until passages R<1>, R<2> are closed by the piston when the residuum is compressed and fuel admitted to the combustion chambers a and fired. 'The lowpressure cylinders exhaust through mechanically-actuated valves S<1>, S<2>. The passages between the high and low pressure cylinders are interchanged to reverse the engines, the oscillating valves l directing the hot gases either through the pipes J<1>, J<2> or directly through the passages R<1>, R<2>. and the valve y interchanging the connection between the air pipes x<1>, x<2>. By adjusting the valves l between their extreme positions, some of the hot gases may be allowed to flow into the low-pressure cylinder which is performing its exhaust stroke.
