Abstract

283,940. Franchimont, E., and Cesar, V. Jan. 20, 1927, [Convention date]. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Heating charge.-A combined hot air and internal-combustion engine comprises two pistons 1, 2 on a single piston rod 4 which work in a partitioned cylinder to form three working chambers A, B, C, the first of which, A, serves as an internal-combustion engine cylinder and the other two, B, C as air compressing or hot-air engine cylinders utilizing the waste heat of the internalcombustion engine. In the form shown in Fig. 2, both cylinders B, C act in the same manner, either as compressor units or as hot-air engine units, depending on the position of a distributing valve 63 and of a slotted link 60 of a Hackworth link mechanism controlling a slide valve 54. When working as a compressor the chambers B, C draw air through a filter 50 and non-return valves 13 into a chamber 51 and then through a passage 52 into the cylinder partition 3 and past the slide valve 54, and discharge it past the slide valve 54 through a port in the distributing valve 63 and a non-return valve 15 into a tank 14 which is connected up with other cylinders. When the chambers B, C are working as hot-air engine cylinders, compressed air passes from the tank 14 and is heated first by scavenging gases delivered by a pipe 41 to a heating chamber 42<2>, and then by the exhaust gases of a combustion cylinder A. delivered bv a pipe 40 to a heating chamber 18, and may be finally heated by circulating round the combustion head; the hot air is then admitted to the cylinders B, C under the control of the slide valve 54 the distributing valve 63 and the Hackworth link mechanism having been moved over, and after expansion passes through the passage in the cylinder partition 3 and is used to scavenge and charge the combustion cylinder A, its admission thereto being controlled by a slide valve 61, also controlled from the Hackworth linkage 57. 60 by a connecting rod 62. Two fuel injection valves 69 are shown acting alternately: by cutting one valve out the engine may work as a four-stroke motor with twostroke scavenging. Control of the distributing and fuel injection valves, which latter are also connected with the Hackworth linkage, may be effected from a distance bv means of servo-motor systems 77, 79 to reverse the motion of the engine or the functioning of the air cylinders.
