446,070. Opposed-piston oil engines. RENO, E., Chabreloche, Puy de D¶me, France. Sept. 23, 1935, No. 26323. Convention date, Sept. 24, 1934. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] In an engine having opposed pistons 4, 8 and a precombustion chamber 28 in communication with the space 29 between the pistons, the volume of the chamber is a maximum at the moment when fuel is injected through a nozzle 19 and diminishes during the expansion stroke to expel the burnt gases. The precombustion chamber is formed either by a cylinder in which a piston 16 integral with the piston 8 reciprocates or by a cylinder integral with the piston 8 which slides over a stationary piston carrying the injector. The communication between the chamber 28 and the space 29 is provided by helicoidal or oblique passages 22 in a core piece 21. The lower parts of the cylinder and the piston 4 are preferably enlarged to form a scavenging pump 23, 24 which delivers air through a passage 27 into an adjacent cylinder when admission ports 6 are uncovered by the piston 8.
