Abstract

529,858. Oil engines. SELIGMAN, R. A. L. June 9, 1939, No. 16936. Convention date, June 16, 1938. [Class 7 '(iii)] In oil engines having the piston 3 provided with a boss 7 which, at the end of the stroke, enters a corresponding recess 4 in the cylinder end or an opposed piston 2, or vice versa, the end 7 of the boss fits into the first part 4 of the recess, so as to compress air into an enlarged part 5 of the recess, this air being later ejected into the combustion chamber 11 through a groove 8 and helical channels 9 in the boss. The boss is joined to the piston by an enlarged fillet 10 which causes the air to flow outwardly.
