Abstract

447,908. Oil engines. BLACKSTONE & CO., Ltd., and CARTER, W. E., Rutland Engineering Works, Stamford, Lincolnshire. Nov. 24, 1934, No. 33801. [Class 7 (iii)] The combustion chamber 3 of a compressionignition engine is connected to the working cylinder through a passage into which a projection 5 on the piston 1 enters, and one or more inclined slots 6 or the equivalent are cut across the projection to lead the air across the extension to the further wall of the combustion chamber. Air is also admitted into the chamber tangentially through a groove 7 cut in the wall of the chamber or in the projection. The groove may stop short of the top of the projection so that it is only uncovered at the end of the compression stroke. A fuel injector 8, which may be offset or inclined to the piston axis, and the inlet and exhaust valves are located in the combustion chamber, which may be of cylindrical, spherical or ellipsoidal form.
