Abstract

531,910. Oil engines. LANCIA & CIA FABBRICA AUTOMOBILI-TORINO SOC. ANON. July 12, 1939. No. 20302. Convention date, July 13, 1938. [Class 7 (iii)] In engines having the combustion chamber largely formed by a cavity in the piston, the fuel injector is arranged so that the fuel jet meets the piston face externally of the cavity, and is directed towards a portion of the edge of the cavity which precedes, with regard to the direction of air circulation in the cylinder, the plane passing through the axis o of the cavity, and the point a where the jet axis meets the piston face at upper deadcentre. Figs. 1 and 3 show the cavity 9 arranged eccentrically, the axis of the fuel jet 5 being arranged in the diametrical plan a b and at an angle of at least 15 degrees with the cylinder axis, the angle b a o being at least 8 degrees, and the distance a o at least one-tenth longer than the radius of the edge of the cavity. Air inlet occurs through ports 10 inclined to cause a whirl in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 3, and exhaust takes place through a valve 4. In a modification, the cavity is concentric with the piston, and the plane a b is at one side of a diameter.
