157,485. Still, W. J. June 6, 1919. Valves. - In compound internal-combustion engines, and particularly those wherein steam is used expansively behind the pistons, the gases are partially exhausted from the low-pressure cylinder through ports 8 controlled by a piston valve 6 and through a space 9 containing a steam generator, the steam from which may be utilized in the engine. The spent gases remaining in cylinder 2 after the exhaust valve closes are oompressed by the piston and then expand to carry it past its dead centre. The fuel charge is admitted to the cylinder 1 through ports 10 controlled by a piston valve 6a and expels any remaining spent products through the port 3 before it is covered by the ascent of piston 1<a>.
