Abstract
152,049. Knolles, E. Miles-, and Butcher, C. A. April 4, 1919. Valves.-The compression pressure in an engine cylinder is kept constant although the weight of charge may vary by a loaded loose piston 3. The preferred method of loading is by placing the space 2 into communication with a relatively large chamber 8 containing air under the required compression pressure. The piston is arrested by a stop 4 in one direction, and by trapping air in the end of the space 2 when the explosion forces the piston beyond the ports 7. The piston may be formed on the end of a rotary sleeve valve which surrounds the piston.
