Abstract

Cylinders, varying clearance of.-A small cylinder 1 is screwed into the head of the working cylinder; it carries a piston 3, loaded with a spring 6, compressed air trapped in the space 5 which is adjusted in volume by the plug 8, or by both a spring and compressed air. The piston carries a plug 10 which enters an opening 2 with a slight clearance. The effect of this addition to the engine is that at slow speeds the air his time to enter the cylinder during the compression stroke and by rais. ing the piston 3 increases the clearance space and so avoid premature ignition, but at high speeds when the piston reaches its dead centre before ignition can occur the rise of pressure in the cylinder 1 is not rapid enough to raise the piston 3. Several chambers 5 can be connected together and supplied with compressed air by a single pump.
