Abstract
110,657. Garner, H., and Parker, W. J. Dec. 22, 1916. Cylinders, construction of.-To avoid knocking at low speeds when heavy oil is used in engines designed to use light oil, the effective clearance is automatically adjusted according to the piston speed by providing the cylinder with a small clearance chamber 1 which is separated from the combustion chamber by a perforated diaphragm 4. The charge, being compressed, has more time to escape through the hole 5 at low speeds and the final compression pressure is thereby reduced. The diaphragm has a recess 9 and, by its inversion, the relative volumes of the chamber 1 and the combustion chamber may be altered.
