Abstract
213,184. Romeyn, J. Aug. 2, 1923. Cylinders receiving liquid fuel. - A projection h on the cylinder cover enters a corresponding cavity g in the piston towards the end of the compression stroke, and expels air from the cavity into the annular space j. A whirling motion is imparted to the air by helical grooves k, formed on the walls of the projection h. or the cavity g. The projection may be mounted on the piston, and the cavity formed in the cylinder head; in an opposed piston engine a projection or one piston enters a cavity in the other. A plurality of fuel in. jectors f distributed round the annular chamber j may be used. The invention is applicable to both four-stroke and two-stroke cycle engines; in the latter case piston ports in the cylinder walls are used instead of the valves d and e.
