Abstract
623,084. Combustion chambers for direct injection engines. SOC. ANON. A CITROEN. March 29, 1945, No. 7950. Convention date, Oct. 15, 1942. [Class 7 (iii)] Liquid fuel is injected in multiple jets into the air entering the cylinder to form a stratified charge which is then forced into a turbulence chamber in which a sparking plug is situated. In Fig. 1 the fuel is sprayed from a multiple jet fuel injector 3, situated in a combustion chamber 6 containing the sparking plug 4 and the.exhaust valve 2, into the air entering on the suction stroke through the inlet valve 1. The combustion chamber is spherical or cylindrical and arranged to produce rotation of the mixture forced there on the compression stroke. Modifications are described in which the fuel injector is placed at the side of the cylinder, and one modification, Fig. 6, has the sparking plug 4 in the cylinder head opposite a spherical combustion chamber 6 formed in the piston 5. Another modification, Fig. 7, has the fuel injector 3 and combustion chamber 6 in the cylinder head and the inlet and exhaust ports 1, 2 in the side of the cylinder.
