Abstract
554,093. Oil engines. THORNYCROFT & CO., Ltd., J. I., and DACK, W. S. July 14, 1942, No. 9798. [Class 7 (iii)] The piston contains a hemispherical combustion chamber with a central frustro-conical projection 9 opposite which is located a fuelinjection nozzle 5. The chamber is struck from a centre A and B is the centre of the curve which merges into the projection 9. The angle of the wall of the projection 9 to the vertical is approximately 15 degrees. To produce whirling of the entering air charge, the air inlet passage 4 may enter the cylinder tangentally or the valve may be masked. The combustion chamber may be disposed off the axis of the cylinder and the fuel injector may be disposed otherwise than as shown in Fig. 1.
