Abstract
856,704. Fuel injection engines. DAIMLERBENZ A.G. Feb. 26, 1959 [March 15, 1958], No. 6721/59. Class 7(3). A diesel engine piston-head combustion chamber 18, Figs. 1 and 2, has a side wall 19 receiving, at an angle (as seen in plan view) between about 10 degrees and nearly 90 degrees, fuel jets 20, 21 from a nozzle 15, the side wall 19 being in the form of a spiral which in the direction of injection becomes progressively nearer the piston circumference and, in this embodiment, less inclined to the piston crown. The whole chamber 18 may be in the form of a spiral, Fig. 7, the ends of which may meet leaving a central circular boss. Exhaust and inlet valves 13, 16 and passages 14, 17 are provided, the valve 16 or passage 17 being such as to swirl combustion air in the direction of the arrow 22.
