Abstract

789,423. Fuel-injection engines DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. March 7, 1956 [March 8, 1955], No. 7186/56. Class 7(3) A combustion chamber 22, Fig. 1, broadens conically towards the end remote from the injection nozzle 18 and the fuel is injected so as to impinge against the part of the wall adjacent the narrowest end of the chamber, the air charge in the chamber being set into rotation about the axis thereof either by screened inlet valves or tangential openings into the chamber. In Fig. 1 the injector 18 is situated centrally of a pair of screened inlet valves 15 and a pair of exhaust valves 16 and to assist the entry of the rotating air charge into the combustion chamber a recess 21<SP>1</SP> may be provided around the part of the lip of the chamber adjacent the inlet valves 15. In a modification having single inlet and exhaust valves, the injector is inclined and in a further modification the combustion chamber is arranged at an angle in the cylinder head whilst the injector is situated in the cylinder wall. In Fig. 6 the combustion chamber 22 is provided with a tangential inlet 24 which produces rotation of the charge therein.
