865,584. Fuel-injection engines. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG-NURNBERG A.G. Aug. 6, 1957 [Aug. 4, 1956], No. 24753/57. Class 7(3). In an engine in which the fuel is injected directly on to the wall of a combustion chamber 6, Fig. 1, in the piston and vaporized by the rotating combustion air, the combustion chamber is provided with a central opening 10 for the flow of air and gases into and out of the chamber and a second opening 11 arranged near the wall of the chamber through which the fuel is injected, the fuel jet being screened from the stream of air 14 forced across the space between the piston and cylinder head. In Fig. 1 the openings 10, 11, are formed in a plate 7 fixed to the mouth of the chamber 6 and the injection nozzle 5 projects through the hole 11 at top dead centre to screen the fuel jet from the air stream 14. The plate 7 may have a downwardly projecting lip around the opening 10. In a modification, Fig. 7, the central opening 110 is defined by the part 113 of the piston and the second opening 111 is formed through the piston and forms a pocket which merges into the chamber 6. When the nozzle 5 does not project below the cylinder head, the nozzle bore 19 is continued by a sleeve 20 which enters the hole 111 at top dead centre and screens the fuel jet.
