Abstract

760,860. Combustion chambers. DAIMLERBENZ AKT.-GES. July 12, 1954 [July 24, 1953], No. 20317/54. Class 7 (3). A main combustion chamber formed by a hollow 18 in the piston head is provided with spiral fins 21 inside the hollow in order to cause whirling of the air during compression, the spiral fins 21 radiating from a central space 20 which affords a space into which an injection nozzle or precombustion chamber outlet 15 projects at top dead centre. As shown, the fuel is injected into a precombustion chamber 13 the outlet orifices 16 of which are arranged so that each orifice injects into one of the spiralshaped sectors between two adjacent fins 21. The hollow 18 terminates in a flat rim 19 on the piston head and the top edges of the fins lie level with the rim 19. The chamber 13 is situated between four valves in the cylinder head. In a modification, Fig. 4, having only two valves in the cylinder head, the precombustion chamber is eccentric of the cylinder axis and may be parallel or inclined thereto, the fins 21 radiating from the space 20 and the openings 16 being inclined to the radii of the precombustion chamber outlet member 15. In further modifications the orifices 16 may be replaced by annular slits and the space 20 may be sunk more deeply than the part provided with fins, which fins may not extend to the level of the rim 19 so that fuel may be sprayed over the top thereof.
