Abstract
643,619. Combustion chambers. OESTERREICHISCHE SAURER-WERKE AKT.- GES. May 21, 1948, No. 13782. Convention date, May 21, 1947. [Class 7(iii)] In a direct injection engine having formed in the piston 3 a shallow combustion chamber 4, the maximum diameter of which is greater than that of its mouth 5, the axis of the chamber 4 coincides with the piston axis and the fuel nozzle 11 is inclined to their common axis so that the axis of the nozzle and the fuel jet passes through the centre of the chamber 4 when the piston is at top dead-centre. A recess 7 may be formed in the lip 5 to prevent the fuel jet impinging on the lip, and a similar recess may also be formed diametrically opposite the recess 7 so that assembly of the piston the wrong way round will not interfere with engine operation.
