Abstract

715,749. Combustion chambers. LANOVA AKT.-GES. April 5, 1951 [Sept. 6, 1950], No. 7921/51. Class 7(3) In a fuel injection engine provided with a combustion chamber 5, Fig. 1, in the cylinder head with a fuel nozzle 11 and an air cell 15 at opposite sides thereof, the axis of the combustion chamber is offset with respect to the cylinder axis and the lower part 6 of the chamber 5 is cylindrical whilst the upper part has a gradually reducing cross-sectional area 7, Fig. 1, or has a substantially spherical shape, Fig. 4, and the height of the chamber is substantially equal to the diameter of the cylindrical portion 6, which latter is widened at 10 on the side nearest the cylinder axis so that it merges into the bottom wall of the cylinder head. The fuel injector 11 is mounted in a casing 12 forming part of the cylinder casting and surrounded by the engine cooling medium and an auxiliary such as a glow plug is mounted in a bore 8. In a two-stroke engine the piston-controlled inlet ports are arranged on the same side of the cylinder axis as the combustion chamber 5, and the outlet ports on the opposite side. The piston may have a flat head, Fig. 1, or it may be provided with a shallow depression 18, Fig. 4.
