Abstract

663,313. Precombustion chambers. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. May 2,1949 [Sept. 27, 1948], No. 11678/49. Class 7(iii) An internal combustion engine comprises a precombustion chamber 11 which is disposed in the cylinder head 8. eccentrically arranged in relation to the axis of the cylinder 4 and connected to the main combustion space in the cylinder by a duct 14 which opens into the space with steep inclination and slight eccentricity thereto so that in the upper dead centre position of the piston 5 there is formed, between the piston head 6 and the mouth of the duct, a passage constituting an annular gap of washer-shape through which distribution of the contents of the precombustion chamber is effected to all sides of the main combustion space. The piston head 6 has an eccentrically positioned annular trough 7 which constitutes the main combustion space. The chamber 11 is spherical and inclined at 70-85 degrees to the trough. The end 15 of the duct is parallel to the trough but may be inclined thereto and the cross-sectional area of the gap, that is the inside circumference of the gap multiplied by its mean height, is preferably equal to the cross-sectional area of the duct 14. The chamber 11 is closed by a sleeve 16 having an injection nozzle 18 which is co-axial with the duct and is shielded by a disc 17. The inlet valve 10 is larger than the exhaust valve and so the centre of the trough is somewhat laterally displaced frcm the centres of the cylinder, duct and chamber 11 which are in alignment, Fig. 2 (not shown). The eccentricity of the chamber 11 is preferably equal to half the radius of the cylinder. The walls of the cylinder head adjacent the chamber 11 and, if desired, the valves are water cooled. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the sleeve 16 abuts against a shoulder in the wall of the chamber 11. Specification 369,155 is referred to.
