Abstract
609,349. Combustion chambers. FORD MOTOR CO., Ltd., and MARTLAND, L. March 12, 1946, No. 7642. [Class 7 (iii)] The combustion chamber of a compressionignition internal-combustion engine with a substantially flat-topped piston c has a sloping roof b in which are situated the inlet and exhaust valves e, f, and a side wall d in which is located the fuel injector g, preferably in a position symmetrical with respect to the valves. The dotted lines show a slightly modified form. The injector is positioned so that the axis of the fuel spray is parallel to the sloping roof of the chamber, and the arrangement is such that during air admission there is a primary swirl (Fig. 1) about the cylinder axis which is maintained during compression, whilst due to the squish action of the minimum clearance areas in the cylinder a secondary swirl (Fig. 2) is produced, the axis of which is at right angles to the axis of the primary swirl.
