608,821. Combustion chambers. CHAPMAN, C. W., and GOSLING, A. W. March 1, 1946, No. 6465. [Class 7 (iii)] A fuel-injection compression ignition engine has a combustion chamber 1 formed in the cylinderhead, offset from the cylinder axis, and connected to the cylinder space 3 by a short tangential transfer passage 4, and is characterised in that the fuel injector 5 is disposed within the chamber at a position spaced apart from the passage 4 and so located that at least part of the fuel is sprayed in the direction of swirl of the air in the chamber and part directly through the transfer passage into the cylinder space. Instead of being in the position shown, the injector might be vertically above the passage and have only one jet assisting the swirl and then passing through the passage.
