615,324. Two-stroke and four-stroke engines. TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION, and STEVENS; A. H. (Texaco Development Corporation). Nov. 29, 1945, No. 32236. Addition to 596,846. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii)] A modification of the method of operating an internal-combustion engine according to the parent Specification, wherein knocking is eliminated by forming a combustible air-fuel vapour mixture in a localised zone of the combustion space and igniting the mixture promptly to prevent the vapour being disseminated more widely through the combustion space, consists in injecting the fuel during the compression stroke into the swirling air charge in a plurality of radially directed equally spaced jets, a sparking-plug being placed slightly downstream of each jet to ignite the mixture as soon as it is blown thereto, establishing flame fronts . which ignite the mixtures formed by continued injection. The air enters a domeshaped combustion chamber 10 in a tangential direction through a shrouded inlet valve 41, the swirling persisting during the compression stroke and blowing fuel injected in two downwardly inclined jets 46, 47 towards sparking- plugs 62. Each jet may consist of a single orifice or of a group of small orifices and the fuel supply from a cam-actuated pump may be heated by an electric coil. The movement of the piston during the compression stroke produces a slight swirl in a vertical plane in addition to the swirl in the horizontal plane produced during the admission stroke.
