Abstract
1,061,646. Combustion chambers. INSTITUTE KHIMICHESKOI FYSIKI. Oct.3, 1963, No. 26343/63. Heading F1B. A precombustion chamber 4 Fig. 1 which is cut off from the cylinder space at top dead centre by a projection 8 on the piston, is supplied with rich mixture which is ignited by a spark plug 5, the products of incomplete combustion being forced out in jets through orifices 10 to initiate combustion in the main cylinder space 9. In Fig. 1 the main cylinder space is provided with lean mixture through passage 19 from a carburetter section 24 and the precombustion chamber 4 provided with rich mixture from a carburetter section 22 through a pipe 12 whose outlet is near the chamber 4. During suction the cylinder space adjacent chamber 4 is filled with rich mixture which is compressed in space 4 on the compression stroke. Fuel droplets in the rich mixture are vapourized in a chamber 13 situated over a heated portion of the engine. In a modification the main carburetter section 24 is omitted and the cylinder is filled with air only. In Fig. 7 (not shown) the fuel is supplied by a nozzle (38) the jet from which is directed through the gap between valve 3 and its seat into the chamber 4 and in Fig. 8 (not shown) the injection nozzle is situated in the chamber 4 and produces two jets which meet in the space (4) to produce a mist which forms a rich mixture in space (4). A shield (39) prevents fuel being sprayed on to the spark plug 5. Side valve engines are also described.
