Abstract

625,946. Fuel injectors. RICARDO, H. R., and HOLT, G. A. March 7, 1947, Nos. 6450/47 and 4702/48. [Class 7 (iii)] In a compression ignition engine having a combustion chamber A of the type described in Specification 439,426 in which the air is caused to whirl, the fuel is injected in two jets O, P so that at starting the bulk is injected in the direction 0 in opposition to the whirl ,and at normal running the bulk is injected in the same direction P as the whirl. The spring-closed injector valve, Fig. 6, comprises a portion L<SP>2</SP> seating at K2 and carrying a pintle L3 controlling the main injection orifice K<SP>3</SP> for the jet P, an orifice N corresponding to the jet O. At starting the valve lifts slightly causing most of the fuel to pass through N, but on opening wider at normal running most of the fuel passes through K<SP>2</SP>. In Fig. 7, injectors E<SP>1</SP>, E<SP>2</SP>, fed by the same pump, provide jets directed in the direction of and opposed to the air whirl respectively the injector spray characteristics arranging that most of the fuel is injected at starting through E<SP>2</SP> and at normal running through E<SP>1</SP>. A valve R may be provided to cut off the injector E<SP>2</SP> after starting. Specifications 371,025, 384,340, 431,345, 493,702, 617,795, and 625,947 also are referred to.
