Abstract
722,161. Fuel injectors. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. Sept. 29, 1952 [Sept. 27, 1951], No. 24358/52. Class 7 (3). The valve of a fuel injecton nozzle seats at 14 and is provided with an extension 18 having an end portion 19 which produces a finely atomised conical jet for the first portion of the lift of the valve which changes to a concentrated cylindrical jet as the valve lifts higher. The contracted portion 18 meets the slightly conical portion 19 in a sharp edge 20 which is positioned slightly below the end of the outlet orifice 15 when the valve is closed. At idling conditions the valve is not raised sufficiently for the part 19 to move into the orifice 15 and the fuel is sprayed in a finely atomised cone by the lower end of part 18. When the engine is under load the greater fuel supply causes an increased valve lift and when the part 19 moves into the orifice 15 the conical jet is replaced by a dense cylindrical jet with a hollow core. The initial conical jet lasts approximately for the period of ignition-lag and facilitates ignition. The part 19 and the wall of the aperture 15 are formed slightly conical so that the annular gap therebetween increases with increased valve lift.
